Dr. Elizabeth Anastasia[1] Appleboom,[2] or Liz,[3] is a scientist at Cubetown. A former child prodigy,[2] she found herself directionless at Cubetown;[4] after two years, she had deteriorated to a kind of "basement goblin".[5] Marten brought her in contact with Claire, whom she was afraid of thanks to the rumors of her fixing Cubetown, which would result in the discovery of her "failure" to achieve greatness. Claire who was motivated by Liz’ plight to take the job at Cubetown, hoping to fix the situation.[6]
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known of Elizabeth's past other than the fact she holds a US citizenship[7] and appears to be Dutch[8]. Growing up she was a child prodigy that graduated early from MIT and Harvard with PhDs in each.[2] By the time she was 17 she was invited to Cubetown due to her incredible intellect and dissertation. She has mentioned that she did not have a normal childhood thanks to the expectations placed on her by her father, whom she mentioned didn't let her be a normal kid growing up.[9]
Elizabeth was born without hands, during a small flashback from her school days she was bitten by her bully's cat and said she didn't have any hands to begin with otherwise they would have become infected by the bite.[10] And when discussing her arms with Clinton Liz pointed out it took her 3 years to gain full control of her mechanical arms since she lacked the neural pathways for hands to begin with. During those 3 years she had to use a mouth guard to avoid hitting herself by jerking the arms.[11]
Her dialogue implies she's always been a bit of a loner thanks to her intelligence, as she mentions she has never been invited to parties before.[12]
She also seems to have studied at a rather fancy elementary school, since her bully in 4th grade was a countess by the name of Hannelore von Schwarzpunkt.[13] She mentions she was bullied by her at age 13 where she invited everyone in their school to a party except for her.[14]
4000–5000[]
It is assumed that she heard rumors of a new Librarian being hired to organize the place soon after Claire was offered the job.
By the time Marten and Claire arrived in Cubetown with Moray she has spent the last two years aimlessly cooked up in her sub-basement after not being able to find a purpose or achieve any scientific breakthrough.[5]
She is first seen watching over the couple in the background while touring the town, and later approaches Marten while he went out alone after Claire decided to talk terms with Moray.[15]
She convinced Marten she knew of a place to get coffee and dragged him to her sub-basement, as a ploy to talk to him and try to convince him to tell Claire to reject the job. She confesses her struggles and situation to him only for Marten to convince her to come forward with her situation.[16]
Meeting Claire[]
Marten took Elizabeth to the room with Moray and Claire, with the later identifying that she must have been lured in by Marten's chill nature like others before.[17]
After a lengthy discussion about her situation, Elizabeth broke down in tears[18] and was ready to resign only for Claire to deny this and use it as an inspiration to take the library job at Cubetown.[19]
5000–[]
With Claire's new position she suggested celebrating with some drinks with Elizabeth enthusiastically accepting the invite.[12]
The group went to a bar where she had her first beer and soon got drunk and started screaming random science facts, and boasting her mechanical arms. Soon after she went to the bathroom and hesitantly looked at her father's contact on her phone before dropping in on the toilet and soiling her hands while trying to retrieve it.[20]
She returned embarrassed and proceeded to rant some more, letting out details about her relationship with her father and her upbringing. She followed up Marten outside after picking up a call from Hannelore and proceeded to scream at the phone confusing her with her former childhood nemesis. Later she would realize whom she was screaming at and suffer from deep embarrassment.[21]
After Marten's embarrassing encounter with a sleepy Evanescent who almost stripped in front of him, she seemed excited at the idea and proceeded to ask questions rather crudely, even more when Evanescent herself arrived and Elizabeth only retorted with multiple euphemisms about breasts. This made Claire snap back at her with disappointment which caused her to run away from the bar.[22]
After a small pep talk with Marten she went back and apologized to the group, who later decided to partake in some weed much to Elizabeth's excitement. Later in Marten and Claire's room she was seen using Moray as a bong to smoke weed and coughing violently with her first hit.[23]
The morning after Elizabeth was seen very relaxed after the experienced and joked about how Marten and Claire considered adopting her while drunk. She also was excited at the prospect of coming up with new ideas under the influence only to realized she doodled about unicorns.[24]
After Marten convinced her that drugs are not the answer to her problems she took a shower at their apartment after his suggestion. This led them to discover that while Elizabeth had an apartment in the same building she abandoned it after clogging the toilet.[25]
She was later seen with Moray and a janitor at her apartment, and after a brief discussion about other denizens of Cubetown, she seemed less embarrassed about her own situation.[26]
After returning she waited and accompanied Marten to look for potential locations for a coffee shop, and after finding a potential location she met the owner Cheshire P. Gecko whose musical and eccentric nature she found annoying.[27]
Back at Marten and Claire's room Elizabeth still seemed unsure of of Gecko's status, and later became sad at the news that Marten and Claire had to return home, only for the couple to invite her on a trip back to Northampton. And later was seen having small arguments while looking for plane tickets since Marten kept pointing out the inconsistent logic of her actions, much to Claire's amusement.[28]
Soon after buying the tickets she showed worry when Moray made a comment about her trip and how she should have fun, saying it has been the most money she has ever spent on something. Additionally she was concerned about Moray's incapability to leave Cubetown, only for it to turn into confusion because she simply lacks a passport.[29] After deciding to travel she was also curious about Northampton's weather and the activities she would be attending. This however led the conversation to remind her of her childhood bully Hannelore von Schwarzpunkt, which led her to show her grudge.[30]
Later, Elizabeth was seen catching up to Marten and Claire before boarding Ol'Boaty and heading to Northampton. The couple was saying their goodbyes to Moray and Evanescent, whom also warned Elizabeth to behave and try not to be deported. Elizabeth retorted with the fact she can't since she is a US citizen, only for Evanescent to say that given her personality they might try.[7]
After greeting Ol'Boaty for the first time since she arrived, she boarded with excitement at the trip and the prospect of some boat jumps, much to Marten's dismay.[31] The excitement soon died down as the prospect of traveling to a new place and meeting new people dawned on her, with Marten's attempts to help only worsening her feelings.[32] Elizabeth nervousness failed to die down, she tried denying the fact to Marten and Claire even as the plane was taking off.[33]
Finally at Northampton, Marten gave Elizabeth a fair warning about Pintsize , also explaining why is it that they tolerate him. All before finding him wearing Claire's dress while holding a different AI on a leash as a dog, further confusing the already doubtful Liz.[34] After some introductions, Liz was still confused regarding Pintsize's actions and even more when he started asking questions regarding science [35]. Elizabeth's answers went over his and Marten's head, and while she showed disappointment in Pintzsize, she complimented the later on not pretending like he knew more that he did.[36]
Soon after Hannelore arrived and introduced herself to Elizabeth[37], and remembering both her childhood bully and the embarrassing rant she went on while drunk [13] she showed some apprehension towards her. Elizabeth proceeded to retell some of her experiences dealing with Hannelore von Schwarzpunkt.[14] Ultimately they bonded over Hannelore's previous experiences and interaction with baby Yaks.[38]
After Hannelore left she carried her conversation with Pintsize, who simply made crude and illogical questions about Black holes.[39] Soon realization came and she was left wondering what to do, she hesitatingly said she wanted to have some fun.[40] After Claire suggested Marten should get a haircut, Pintsize curiously asked her the same. She however ended up spiraling a bit[41] until making the final decision to get one, as means to signify a new beginning for her. Claire enthusiastically suggested the two should have a girls day, listing multiple activities to a fairly excited Elizabeth.[42]
The trio went out, and Liz proceeded to get a new haircut, outfit and even a pedicure where she accidentally kicked one of the employees in the face.[43] They eventually reached Union Robotics to say hello to Faye and Bubbles [44], seeing Elizabeth Faye was quickly to poke some fun at her. She even commented on just how quickly Marten had befriended a new "weirdo", Liz tried defending her position but Marten assured her status as a weirdo, even by Cubetown standards.[45] Elizabeth only denied this, claiming her whole ordeal was a phase.
While Marten and Faye kept the conversation going she was seen enjoying playing and swinging while Bubbles held her.[46] Whilst still on her arms,Bubbles proceeded to ask about her studies with Liz only responding by dismissing the idea that she could comprehend the more advanced concepts of physics. When dared to do so anyway, she started with the description of a cake she desired as compensation by the advice of her PHD advisor.[47]
However Elizabeth soon found herself in trouble with the couple as she started to make inappropriate remarks about Bubbles chest, which Faye originally found amusing. But when confronted with the fact she is a minor and cannot drink in the US Liz ended up rudely dismissing Faye when the later confessed about her drinking problems. This caused her to snap at Elizabeth, who only retreated outside of Union Robotics, where a concerned Claire found her and lectured her about compassion, tactfulness and navigating personal topics. After some crying, and the fact Faye and Bubbles were able to hear the entire exchange, Liz came back providing apologies and even offered her arm in compensation for her attitude. Eventually managing to get on more amicable terms with the couple. Later, she left with Marten and Claire to visit Coffee of Doom.[48]
On the way to the coffee shop, Marten and Claire instructed her on how to behave once they meet the staff. Marten only mentioned she shouldn't be crass to people with mental illnesses[49] and after arriving at the store, she awkwardly tried to convey this to Hannelore. Although the exchange ended up digressing into orbital mechanics.[50]
Her conversation with Hannelore seemed to carry on for a bit, with Hanners questioning her logic behind shooting somebody to Jupiter. Elizabeth assured there was no scientific value in doing so, with the statement completely disregarded human well-being. The exchange made Hannerlore draw a comparison between Liz and the Scientist on the space station, to which Liz only responded with self deprecation and the consideration that she might only be good as a cautionary tale, all which only serve to sadden Hannelore.[51]
After some exchanges Ayomide joined them, hearing the two discuss their struggles with self-loathing and claiming she also had much to add to the conversation. Hannelore only grew frustrated and refused to introduce the two girls until both could say something nice about themselves. Elizabeth proclaimed that she could, but the problem was the "awful" parts of herself. A point Ayomide seemed to enthusiastically relate to.[52]
Following Hannelore's advice the two attempted to be nicer to themselves, but quickly turned back to self deprecation and against her wishes even bonded through it.[53] Snapping out, Liz explained her reason to visit the town and Ayo suggested she might also suffer from Executive Malfunction. Liz however rebutted in a way that led Ayo to be mean to herself again.[54]
Elizabeth quickly apologized and provided some comfort to Ayomide, arguing her situation was maybe worse and that she shouldn't feel as bad. After some tears, Ayo reassured that they were happy tears, a concept Elizabeth found baffling.[55] The conversation continued and Ayomide wondered if Elizabeth had told the truth to her parents, and immediately and ominously warned her against not doing so.[56]
After taking the advice and some more of Ayo's backstory, Liz asked her if she like to party. When she confirmed this, they proceeded to inform Marten and Claire.[57] The two proceeded to continuously make plans and eventually decided to do so at Yemisi's, albeit with some cautious wisdom from Hannelore.[58] The two made more and more plans, eventually getting to Marten, Claire and Hannelore. Elizabeth however decided to try an make up for her words with Faye by inviting her to the party.[59]
At Union Robotics Liz tried her best to invite Faye, not wanting to make her feel excluded like she was in her youth, but Liz had trouble navigating some of the complexities of the situation, specially since she was planning a party with alcohol and Marten already decided to not attend for Faye's sake. Faye politely declined, but thanked Elizabeth for the invitation; the success of the exchange was noted by Claire who was waiting outside for her, and affirmed that this was positive growth. Later she returned to Coffee of Doom and celebrated the small victory with Marten, Claire and Hannelore, with the former also making a jab at her living conditions in Cubetown [60]
Back at the apartment Liz learned about some of the group's living situation, comparing it to a sitcom and accidentally revealing to Claire that she was Dutch. Liz found some annoyance in her comments about her accent and how everyone says the same once they learn of her nationality.[61]
Later, Ayomide arrive before heading out to the party but not before meeting Pintsize. [62] Right before leaving Marten and Claire were giving the girls some advice, including avoid doing cocaine, to which Liz quickly shot down as a possibility.[63] At The trio's apartment, the girls introduced themselves to Willow and eventually Iris.[64]
Personality[]
Elizabeth is a prideful person and rather immature but extremely intelligent, her genius and achievements making her widely recognized before arriving to Cubetown. After her arrival however, the lack of aim and purpose drove her to be kind of a "basement Goblin" where she spent days/weeks inside her office trying to achieve or come up with a discovery to no avail.[65] The expectations placed upon her by herself and others as a future "Nobel prize making machine" exacerbated her desperation. This went on for two years until the arrival of Marten and Claire.[5]
Her prideful nature makes her almost incapable of asking or even accepting any sort of help, such as when she refused Moray's help dozens of times when she tried to check up on Liz and when trying to convince Marten to make Claire refuse the Job as she believed that given enough time she would either get over her problems or die due to them.[5] This extended to even her family as she was seen lying to her father about her time in Cubetown, saying she was achieving a lot and having fun with friends.[65] Then proclaimed that admitting to her problems would bring nothing but shame.
Elizabeth is shown to be deeply aware of both her exceptional characteristics and all of her shortcomings. She seems to paradoxically teeter between a high and low image of herself, claiming she could say tons of good things about herself[52] but also has awful qualities that lead her to proclaim nobody should be like her and that she might serve as a cautionary tale.[51]
Her aversion to disappointment has been displayed when lectured by Claire after inappropriately addressing Evanescent's mishap with Marten, where she cried and ran away after a Claire reprimanded her for the way she talked; and again after Faye reprimanded her for making light of her Drinking problems.[66]
At the most extreme, she abandoned her apartment and stayed in her sub-basement out of shame after clogging the toilet, even though Cubetown had maintenance people that could have dealt with the issue without concern.[67] This has led Marten to suggest she is "pathologically avoidant of asking for help". Even when reaching out to Marten thanks to his Chill nature, she did so only out of desperation after hearing Claire would organize the town and her situation would be discovered.[68]
Beyond her issues she seems like somebody who genuinely desires company and friendship, probably as a result of her self imposed isolation.
Elizabeth is also snarky and often dismissive of others whom she doesn't consider her peer in terms of intelligence. During her introduction to the people of Cubetown she claimed she was smarter than everyone there.[2]
Despite her genius she seems to lack some basic common sense, making her often oblivious to very obvious solutions to basic problems, like not taking her wallet with her simply because she was wearing leggings with no pockets, even though her vest did have some.[69] Or how she avoided getting a new phone, not wanting to reveal to a clerk the embarrassing situation that led to its destruction, only for Marten to mention that she could simply not disclose the details at all.[70]
Her personality seems to take a turn when under the influence of alcohol, where she becomes uninhibited and loud.[71] Screaming at others out of amusement, screaming at Marten's phone while talking to Hannelore thinking it was her childhood bully,[13] and making inappropriate remarks about Evanescent's breasts after a small incident with Marten.[72]
Sex and drugs and rock&roll[]
Sexuality[]
Not much has been shown about Elizabeth's sexual preferences, but she did show enthusiasm and interest at the prospect of Marten seeing Evanescent Incinerator's breasts referring to them in a multitude of euphemisms and even asking the later to let her ride them by placing her on their cleavage.[72] [73] This seems to be a recurring quirk of hers, as she did similarly soon after meeting Bubbles, and even inappropriately objectified and compared her figure to Evanescent's.[47] And later again when planing a party with Ayomide, she proclaimed she doesn't have the best track record with busty women.
She also seems inexperienced in many sexual topics, shown when Claire joked about her brother losing his hand due to excessive masturbation and she quickly turned to Moray for confirmation. But once again this was while she was drunk and could have been played for laughs.[74]
Drugs[]
Elizabeth is a coffee drinker, having a small coffee maker in her sub-basement. While she has never previously partaken in alcohol she seemed open to the idea and later enjoyed beers with Marten and Moray.[12] Elizabeth seems to be a light weight, as she got drunk after only one beer.[75]
She also seems open to the use of Cannabis, as she smoked some using Moray as a bong and later again during a party with Hannelore and Ayomide. Although she may be inexperienced in doing so as she choked on the smoke and coughed violently after her first puff.[76] While she was not shown under its influence, the next morning she was very relaxed and showcased that she tends to doodle while high, and think a lot about Unicorns.[77]
She also showed interest in using ketamine, but this was mainly out the belief that cannabis and other drugs would "fix" her brain.[78] But She's very against the idea of doing Cocaine, saying that a drug that could overstimulate her already fast brain would be a terrible idea. [63]
Relationships[]
Marten[]
Elizabeth doesn't have that many personal or close relationships, partially due to her abrasive and prideful nature, but also after having spent the last 2 years of her life in self imposed isolation.
The first person we see her interact with in an extended manner was Marten, with Claire suspecting she was drawn in by the former's chill nature. The two seem to have formed a friendly bond after Liz explained her situation to Marten, with him probably being the first person she's ever confide her shame to.
Claire[]
Elizabeth was originally wary of Claire after hearing rumors that a new Librarian would finally organize the chaos of Cubetown. She even cried as she told her story to her. and was fearful she would out her and end her tenure in Cubetown, but to her surprise Claire took her story as inspiration to actually become the Librarian and promised to never let what happened to her happen to anyone else.[18] Claire has taken to act as a mentor to Elizabeth, guiding her through some of her issues and lack of social experience, like she did after making inappropriate comments to Evanescent, Bubbles and Faye on separate occasions.
Evanescent Incinerator[]
It seems Elizabeth has previously interacted with Evanescent Incinerator, as the later is aware of the brash personality Elizabeth possesses. This familiarity was shown as Evanescent was unfazed by the inappropriate remarks and euphemisms she used on her breasts while drunk.[73] Even so the two seemed amicable enough that Evanescent let her smoke the cannabis she previously confiscated alongside Claire,[79] and didn't react at the rude gestures Elizabeth made when asked if she was okay, considering them normal for her.[76]
Moray X-21[]
Moray X-21 was one of if not the first person she met when she arrived in Cubetown. Often annoyed at her bubbly personality, not much was seen of Elizabeth's treatment of Moray other than her dismissal at the attempts she made towards checking up on Elizabeth.[65] After confessing her situation to Claire and Moray, and bonding over who was to blame between her failure and Moray's ineptitude the two seemed on more friendly terms.[19] While drunk Elizabeth mentioned she has respect for her as she decided to separate herself from her creator The Director to be her own being, somewhat comparing it to her relationship with her father. Moray took this as a compliment with Liz being the first person to show her respect, but this may have been the alcohol talking or Elizabeth projecting on Moray.[9]
After a night of partying with the three Elizabeth seemed to open herself a bit more to the group, waiting for Marten and alter accompanying him while looking for a place to possibly open a coffee shop in town. She seemed sad at the realization that Marten and Claire would be leaving soon and even considered accompanying them on a trip back to Northampton.[80]
Ayomide[]
Ayomide and Liz met while on Liz's trip to Northampton. The two quickly reached friendly terms with each other, partly due to being the same age but mostly since they could relate to each others sense of failure. The two exchanged pleasantries and self deprecating comments and stories about their lives and much to Hannelore's displeasure, bonded over them. Elizabeth seems to see Ayomide as a kindred spirit who understands the feeling of failing at life, and is one of the few people she hasn't dismissed or insulted for not being on her level of intelligence. Overall, Ayomide might be Liz's first friend her age and the two were comfortable enough to party, get drunk and even high with each other.
Family[]
Elizabeth seems to have a close but rigid relationship with her father, with him holding many expectations on her thanks to her intelligence. It is implied that these expectations prevented her from having a normal upbringing.[9] He was seen calling to check up on her six months after arriving in Cubetown, only for her to lie about her status and amount of friends. The call frustrating her enough to throw her phone at a wall.[65] While drunk she was seen looking at his contact on her phone, thinking about calling him and revealing the nature of the situation and later ranted to the group about how he expected great things from her and apparently didn't let her be a normal kid.[81]
Appearance[]
She is a short young woman with dark hair long enough to reach her waist. She's often seen wearing an oversized lab coat that's dirty at the bottom.
Even though she is 19 years old she's often mistaken for a kid due to her stature.[82]
Being born without arms, she has detachable robot arms with connectors on her arms that are normally covered by her sleeves. These appear as white rings halfway between her shoulders and elbows.[74] They are identical to real arms in appearance aside from the seam, to the point Marten couldn't discern they were artificial until she took one off.
During her visit to Northampton, she had a makeover where she cut her hair to chin length, having it part in the middle with long side bangs.[43]
